Thoughts, reflections and a little inspiration from Karen's Holistic Haven

Life can move so quickly.

We rush from one thing to another, thinking about everything that needs doing, planning what comes next and often forgetting to pause long enough to notice where we actually are.

This month, I've been thinking a lot about being present.

Not doing more. Not trying to become a completely different version of ourselves. Just noticing.

Noticing the little things around us. The warmth of the sun, the sound of birds, the feeling of our feet on the ground, a cup of tea in our hands, or simply taking one quiet breath before moving on to the next thing.

For me, that's one of the things mindfulness has taught me. We don't have to stop our thoughts or empty our minds. We can simply become more aware of when we're caught up in them, and gently bring ourselves back to the moment we're actually living.

Why I came to mindfulness

For a long time, I spent a lot of time in my own head.

Worrying about things that had already happened. Thinking about what might happen next. Trying to control things that were outside my control.

Mindfulness didn't make those thoughts disappear. Instead, it taught me to notice them.

And in that noticing, there can be a little space.

A chance to pause rather than react. To take a breath. To come back to the present moment.

That's why mindfulness has become such an important part of my own life, and why I love sharing these simple practices with others.

More than hair

Although hair and holistic hairdressing are at the heart of the Haven, there's so much more to the space.

I offer treatments and experiences including Indian head massage, Reiki and crystal work, as well as one-to-one time where you can simply come and talk.

Sometimes we don't need someone to fix anything. We just need a safe, welcoming space to slow down, be heard and reconnect with ourselves.

That's what I hope the Haven can be.

Mindfulness and pain

One area I'm particularly interested in exploring is mindfulness and pain management.

Mindfulness isn't about taking pain away. Instead, it can help us develop a different relationship with pain by learning to notice sensations without immediately reacting to them.

Pain can also bring stress, anxiety and tension, which can make everything feel even more difficult.

Mindfulness offers practical tools for creating a little more awareness and space around what we're experiencing. These are simple practices that can be taken into everyday life, whether we're learning to manage pain, quieten a busy mind, reduce stress or simply become more present.

The Mindful Meetup

I'm also delighted to be continuing with my monthly Mindful Meetup.

These relaxed gatherings will take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 12 noon, for approximately one hour at Beaven Wilson.

Each month we'll explore a different mindfulness topic, with simple and practical ideas to take away and use in everyday life, followed by a short guided meditation or mindfulness practice.

You don't need to know anything about mindfulness beforehand. It's simply a space to come together, learn something useful and take a little time for yourself.

A little invitation

Perhaps that's the biggest thing I want to share this month.

You don't always need to do more.

Sometimes you can simply pause.

Look around.

Take a breath.

Notice where you are.

And give yourself permission to be there.

Until next time,

Karen 🌿
